Savior

By Richard Moore

The horrors of the conflict in Bosnia during the early 1990s are rammed home in this absorbing drama, which pulls few punches on the excesses committed in the name of religion.

Dennis Quaid is terrific as an American who loses his family to Muslim terrorists, joins the French Foreign Legion and then sells himself to the Serbs in their war against Muslims in Bosnia.

Quaid begins the tale as a family man who, upon the death of his wife and son, murders Muslims in a mosque then proceeds down the path of dehumanisation to the point he does not care about killing children if they happen to be on the wrong side of the Bosnian Serb/Croat/Muslim divide.

As cold as he tries to paint himself, the essential goodness of Quaid's character comes out and he finds himself defending the Muslim baby of a raped Serbian prisoner against her family and Croats alike.

Savior is filmed in very picturesque countryside, but it is a bleak investigation of the horrendous side of people living and killing in the Balkans.

It is not an enjoyable movie, but it is certainly engaging and will have you on the edge of your seat for most of its running time.
