American general James Wilkinson was leading 8000 men towards Montreal and was some 150 kilometres from his objective when the rear of his force was harassed by 800 British regular soldiers and Indians.

Turning to fight, Wilkinson made a mess of the attack - throwing his men forwards in an uncoordinated fashion - and was throughly beaten.

Wilkinson lost more than 300 men killed and wounded, while at least 100 more were taken prisoner.

The Americans then retreated.
