Inkovo
8 August, 1812
A
large scale cavalry action, Inkovo saw some 3000 horsemen
under General Sebastiani bested by 7000 cossacks under Count
Platov.
The
French suffered several hundred casualties, but the success
did nothing to stiffen the resolve of the Russian
leader Barclay de Tolly.
For
some reason he did not take advantage of the momentum and
halted his line of interception with Napoleon
Bonaparte's Grande Armee.
The
French, however, used the Russian's indecision to cross
the Dnieper in force and move forward for what they hoped
would be a decisive battle at Smolensk.
