Also
known as Smoliani, the second battle of Polotsk took place
when Marshal Victor moved
against General Ludwig Wittgenstein's
army to stop it linking with other Russian forces trying
to halt the French retreat at the Beresina River.
Victor
had the better of the engagement and stopped Wittgenstein
in his tracks.
The
French lost 3000 killed wounded and captured, the Russians
a similar number of casualties.
