Voltri
10 April, 1796
In
a move aimed at disrupting French preparations for an offensive
in Northern Italy, Austria's General Johan Beaulieu decided
to destroy an isolated brigade under General Jean-Baptiste
Cervoni.
He
sent 10,000 men to surround Cervoni's men at the port of
Voltri, some 16 kilometres west of Genoa.
Though
surprised and outnumbered by three-to-one, Cervoni managed
to conduct an almost-textbook withdrawal and beat the trap
set for him.
