Again the French recruits found themselves up against a more experienced foe and were forced to retire.

However, General Jourdan regrouped and the next day surrounded Saxe-Coburg's left wing and drove it backwards.

Forced to retreat, the Austrians ended their siege of Maubeuge with a loss of 3000 men. The French suffered 5000 casualties.
