The
leaders of Austria's armies during the Revolutionary and Napoleonic
Wars have been much maligned over the years, and it is fair to
say most have been portrayed as being doddery, unimaginative generals.
But
in David Hollins' work Austrian Commanders of the Napoleonic Wars,
the author's examination of their careers and abilities may change
some minds.
They
were brave and experienced soldiers drawn from every part of the
sprawling Austrian empire.
Hollins
looks at 29 of Austria's top soldiers and divides them among the
Western (German) and Eastern soldiers. Each has a detailed biography
of his military career and almost all have images of them.
They
include Bellegarde, Schwarzenberg, Hiller, Klenau, Alvintzy, Melas,
Wurmser and the unfortunate General Mack.
If
you are interested in the Austrian army during the Revolutionary
and Napoleonic Wars then this title is worth having in your collection.
