Treaty of Luneville
8 February
1801
Decisive
defeats at Marengo and Hohenlinden
forced the Austrians to sit down again at the table with France
and they would have been pleasantly surprised by the mild terms
demanded.
Vienna
had to reaffirm its commitment to the Treaty of Campo Formio, while
France paid compensation for dispossessed Rhine princes and returned
the King of Naples to his throne.
