At
Bassano, generals Augereau
and Massena set upon separate
flanks of Austria's General Wurmser's
army.
In
the ensuing struggle one Austrian division was forced to
surrender and it was only with great difficulty that the
commander was able to extricate himself, and a few troops,
and make the dubious safety of an under-siege city of Mantua.
His
arrival boosted the defenders' ranks to 28,000 men.
Bassano
cost Wurmser 4000 men captured and major amounts of supplies
lost to the French. Their losses were slight.
