Dagobert Wurmser

Austrian General
1724-1797

Michael MelasA native of Strasbourg, Dagobert Wurmser served France until joining the Austrians.

When the French Revolution broke out, he fought his former country and besieged Mainz.

He served in northern Italy and was part of Austrian attempts to break the siege of Mantua.

Initially it succeeded, but Wurmser was beaten at Castiglione and then, following a drubbing at Bassano, retreated into the fortress he was trying to free.

Mantua surrendered in February 1797 and Wurmser died later that year.
