Napoleon Bonaparte's 18,000 men moved against the advance troops of General Alvintzy's 27,000-man force.

Using remarkable speed the Austrians were able to reinforce their line and used their greater numbers to fend the French off.

Bonaparte withdrew suffering 2000 casualties.
