Jemappes
6 November, 1792
The
Austrian army was in winter quarters near Jemappes, in the
Austrian Netherlands (Belgium) when attacked by the French.
Outnumbered
by more than three to one, the 13,000 Austrians were beaten
by General Dumouriez's 45,000 Frenchmen.
Losses were 2000 suffered by the French and 1500 to the
defenders.
A boost for the fledgling republic, the revolutionary forces
went on to capture Brussels.
