The Artillery
The
most-effective killer of men on the Napoleonic battlefield, artillery
usually decided the outcome of the major clashes. The idea was to
get the big guns as close to the enemy as safely possible and then
blast massive holes in their formed ranks. Solid shot was he most
common missile fired by cannons, although cannister and exploding
shells were also used. Shrapnel was used for the first time during
the Napoleonic Wars.
